Chairmans Notes
David Howell

The team's performances have been mixed but we can always rely on their commitment and in the final analysis, I remain confident that we will pull clear of relegation and finish on a similar points tally to last year. Whilst that may be viewed as an under-achievement by some, it must be recognised that the Southern League Premier Division is very competitive and there are many clubs in lower divisions who aspire to be where we are now.

The decision taken by the Football Management Committee to call it a day was the right one in my opinion and on reflection, it was perhaps a flawed plan but introduced for all the right reasons. The objective was to engender greater supporter participation in the hope that a ring-fenced budget into which all gate receipts and player budget scheme donations were placed would encourage more fans to come down and support the team. Sadly, this didn't happen and despite the FMC's best efforts, gates have continued to decline.

There will always be debates about how best to grow your fan base and many will say that you need to invest in your team first but the reality is that the money has to come from somewhere and we can't spend what we haven't got. My principal concern is to make sure that the Club continues to play football at the highest level possible, without jeopardising its existence. I make no apology for that and the dire financial problems experienced by many clubs up and down the country surely demonstrates that the old adage "speculate to accumulate" is destined to disaster. I may be cautious but then I know just how close this Club was to collapse 10 years ago and I have no intention of letting that happen again whilst I'm around.

As ever, there are lots of different opinions in football and if you have any comments you wish to raise then please come along to the clubhouse on Monday evening, 15 March, at 7.30pm for a Fans' Forum.
